On Sunday, November 10, 2002, I had my first Barking Engagement at Books & Books. I knew it was going to be a special day when my hair was combed and untangled. Not being sure if this was a good or bad thing, I decided to wait it out and see what would happen. On a little hanger by the front door was my tuxedo and top hat, which I took as another sign that this day was going to be different from any other I had ever known. Then the Little Lady's friend came over and started to make a fuss over me. Something was in the air. Next I was seated in my special car seat and we were off to heavens knows where. We finally drove up to a building and parked. People started coming at us in order to help me get formally attired, which didn't exactly strike a warm chord in my heart. We were led into a beautiful room filled with books from floor to ceiling. Never once did I think of leaving my mark, especially with the leash that was tightly around my neck. I was placed on a table, which was very scary except for the fact that the Little Lady kept rubbing my back and assuring me that everything would be all right, and that I was not to worry. This was not the time to argue with her since she seemed as uptight as I was. The room filled with people, standing room only, and guess what? They came to see me! and hear about my fabulous book. They were such a friendly group that I decided to let my guard down and rest on the table. I love hearing my words read out loud and the Little Lady did such a good job of this. After she finished, people came crowding around me, and guess what? They wanted me to autograph my book but mostly, for me anyway, they brought me gifts of FOOD!!!!!! Yummies galore. Bless you, my children. I ate one without taking the paper off which everyone was concerned about except for the Little Lady, who is not phased by anything I do. Then I was put down on the floor and I went up to each and every one of my guests and personally licked them, (my form of saying thank you). Soon enough everyone left and I was both confused and exhausted by what had just occurred. My books were all sold out and my tummy was growling, as usual. So off came the tuxedo and top hat and we went out for a hamburger and fries. What a wonderful day this turned out to be! |
